What I want to know is who likes this kinda stuff? Who the hell does this guy think he is? Trying-to-be, wanna-be, somethingorother gunk that is not at all that great. What I was looking for was something on the order of sensual for lovemaking and what not, being close with a loved one, etc, and what I got was a bunch of “d” class dyke coffee house music. Yes, I said Dyke! It’s what you’ll think about the girl your with when she becomes disenchanted from listening to this. This one is not quite makin’ it.

This is some imposter posing as Ray LaMontagne. This is not the RL that I have come to know and love. Free Ray LaMontagne! He is being held captive somewhere and must be released so this phony baloney passing himself off as the master will be exposed for the fake that he is.

mediocre regurgitated safe as houses purveyor of NEW Soul music.
Heard it all before….and done better.
And it is way too safe for my liking too.
So many current artists are NOT re-inventing the wheel. They are borrowing spokes. Do your music History research folks.
I have years and years of digging in the past before I’ll be caught with this weak as water pretender in my collection.
2 Stars for his Voice. He was born with that!

This CD was a huge disappointment. Following “Trouble”, Ray’s energy, grit, and art has deteriorated and his music and career has become boring. Perhaps he’s become fat and happy from the success he has found. His music seems to lack the hunger and the fire which made him an instant favorite of mine after discovering the CD “Trouble”. I don’t believe a musician has to stay underground forever and have no problem with artists finding wealth and success, but the chips on Ray’s shoulders from a unique childhood and obvious passion seem to be smoothed over and the art that results from pain seems to be lost. Maybe he should get a drug problem for his next album. The music seems forced and planned and “marketed”. The CD cover is obnoxious and I can picture a publicist or record company executive spending hours trying to cultivate the rugged and disinterested look that somehow remains marketable. I think Amazon’s description of the genre sums it up: “Beautiful Melancholy”. I am sure we can look forward to some of these songs making their way into an awful date movie soon.

With the exception of two good tracks the rest of the album is just forgettable filler. As much as I appreciate Ray trying to push the avenues of his own creativity this album holds no candle to the previous “Til the Sun Turns Black.” I’m a Ray fan and I just can’t find anything on this album that strikes any emotion in me.
The first two albums moved me and the music just caught your attention in a pleasant phonetic way. I’m really pained to say this because Ray has become one of my favorite artists over the past few years and I was highly anticipating this album but alas I’m extremely disappointed. Sadly enough the albums final track “Gossip In the Grain” is probably the best track, it should have started the album off and followed this style and progression. I’m not looking for a repeat of the first two albums but I do expect great song writing and catchy tunes and I just don’t get it with this album. His own website tags this new album with the quote “”his most creative and emotionally expansive collection to date”. Apparently Rays own page updater didn’t listen to the new album because this is anything but emotionally expansive. Plus the Meg White song is just flat out annoying, annoying…
