travelma is right. joe mcarthy (senator i believe) was on a witch hunt for communists in the late 40’s early 50’s. senate hearings were held and names of many hollywood stars and entertainers came out.. some stars were able to withstand the bad publicity. Lucille Ball was one of them joining the communists party (signature only ) to please her grandfather. others just faded and were ruined because of the publicity.
